The Assam state of India has experienced unprecedented floods this year, with unexpected timing and intensity. The deluge was caused by incessant rainfall in late June, which affected millions and devastated vast areas. According to The Hindu, as of 21 July 2024, the death toll in this year’s flood, lightning and storm had increased to 113. In early July, the government had set up 489 relief camps and distribution centres in 21 districts, providing shelter to 286,776 people.
Karimganj district was one of the worst hit by the flood, with 300 villages affected. Countless homes have been damaged, and families have been displaced. They face critical food shortages and urgent medical needs. The affected communities are confronted with immense challenges as stored food supplies have been depleted, and the upcoming harvest has been ruined. They urgently require food, shelter, clean water, and essential hygiene materials to survive this crisis.
While we cannot control natural disasters, we can make a difference through our prayers and donations. Please stand together with us in providing relief to those affected by the devastating flood in Assam.
Project Details
- Fund allocated: US$16,500 (approx. HK$130,020)
- Project period: July to Aug 2024
- Number of beneficiaries: 365 families in 12 villages of Karimganj district in Assam State
- Providing food (rice, toor dal, salt, spices, sugar, cooking oil, etc) and hygiene kits (bathing soap, washing soap, sanitary pad or napkin, toothbrush and toothpaste, etc) to 245 families
- Providing cash assistance to 120 families (each family with Indian Rupee 4000, approx. HK$370)

The fund will enable us to respond to immediate needs, and support disaster mitigation in poor nations always being hit by disasters to reduce the amount of devastation.
