Afghanistan, which has already been grappling with humanitarian and economic crises for many years, experienced a series of earthquakes in the city of Herat in western Afghanistan from 7 to 15 October. At least four of them were of magnitude six or above, making people’s lives even more difficult. Earlier in the news, it was announced that more than 2,000 people lost their lives and thousands were injured. According to the UN’s data as of 14 October, although the official casualty figures were adjusted downward, more than 1,300 people have still lost their lives, and over 1,800 people were injured. In addition, a partner of CEDAR informed us that about 1,320 houses have been completely destroyed, and about six villages have been devastated.
CEDAR’s partner in the area is conducting relief efforts, providing US$170 (approximately HK$1,335) in cash to each household affected by the earthquake, including those who have lost family members or have experienced injuries and households whose houses were partially or totally damaged. It is estimated that 500 households (around 3,500 direct beneficiaries and an additional 1,750 indirect beneficiaries) will receive assistance. CEDAR has allocated US$12,000 (approximately HK$94,200) to support the rescue project. Please donate now to help the affected victims.
