Last December, Cyclone Michaung wreaked havoc in India, causing widespread rainfall-induced disasters in the southern regions. The floods resulted in at least 25 deaths and extensive collapse and inundation of homes. A significant number of affected families had to be urgently evacuated from low-lying areas to safer locations, leaving their lives in disarray.
In the severely affected Tamil Nadu state, torrential rain flooded multiple buildings, including government hospitals, railway stations, and residential homes. Numerous roads were damaged due to the floods. The strong winds caused many makeshift houses to collapse, forcing the residents to seek temporary shelter in tents. There is an urgent need for food support for these displaced individuals. Additionally, the floods submerged extensive farmlands, and oil spills resulting from the heavy rain are affecting the livelihoods of fishermen. Some affected individuals are experiencing symptoms such as skin sensitivity and headaches.
In response to the needs of the disaster-affected population, CEDAR has decided to allocate US$18,000 (approximately HK$141,300) to support a local partner in conducting relief work in the Chengalpattu District of Tamil Nadu. Based on the initial assessment by our partner, we have chosen to provide emergency relief supplies to around 350 households (approximately 1,400 people) in the area. This assistance includes the distribution of one month’s worth of emergency food, hygiene items, waterproof canvas, and other relief materials to help the affected residents address their immediate needs and reduce the risk of disease outbreaks.
Jesus teaches us: ‘And if anyone gives even a cup of cold water to one of these little ones who is my disciple, truly I tell you, that person will certainly not lose their reward.’ (Matthew 10:42) May the Lord enable us to earnestly practice the love of the Lord, and through the Church and by the Church, extend assistance to those in need, all in the name of Christ.
